Streatham 1962 To 1975

A Memory of Streatham.

St Andrews primary school with Mr Collins the headmaster and a very scary teacher called Mrs Mason. School dinners in the sea cadets hut across the road which looked like a ship inside!. Then Bishop Thomas Grant from 1968, which I loved, and left in 1974.
Pratts in Streatham High Road my mums favourite shop and also for tea in the 'posh' restaurant upstairs. My sister and I were always petrified walking though the china and glass dept being told to keep our arms by our side by our mum. There was also dept stores called Sharmans and Tyrell's in the high street and the Boots chemist which had a dark wooden staircase. The Astoria cafe near to the cinema which did lovely milkshakes. The school uniform shop called Bostocks and the Green Shield Stamp Shop.
Happy memories too of the Silver Blades Ice rink, Odeon cinema and the wonderful smell from the deli next to the library. Hours spent in the Rookery with my nan, but was never allowed to go in the paddling pools however warm the weather, never understood why as a child either. I could go on and on...

I went to St Andrews School from 1965-71. I remember. I remember that bully of a teacher Miss Mason. I had the most unfortunate luck having her as my first teacher at the age of 5. She has a lot to answer for. All I remember about her is being smacked up the back of the legs or the hand. I do remember the dinner hall all holding hands to cross the road. I used to live in Babbington Rd. I also remember silver blades ice ring. I also went to B T G secondary school did not like it there. But I loved Mr Collins.
I was at St Andrews while Mr Collins was there. Miss Carling, Mrs Gallagher, Mr Kennedy, Mr Engle (a fruitcake!) etc...I was captain of the football team in 1958....Mr Collins would come into class (Mr Kennedy's (right next to Mr Proctor's (janitor) with a hand full of stiff collars and I had to walk to Streatham station and leave them at the cleaners.
Every lunchtime I had to cross the road and get the teachers lunches and bring them back to that little room behind the class as previously stated. I recall many names and wonder where they are now. I am in touch with Anne Loosemore......
Mr Collins once drove me to Battersea Park Mansions where he lived...cannot recall why.
I think they were happy times. Walked to school with my sister June from the age of six.....we lived in the flats in Aldrington Road........

I remember Mrs Mason and her sausage dog!,dinner in the hall over the road, the mash comes to mind.playing cricket and football in the playground, remember when Pauline Collins and her husband John Alderton came to see Mr Collins, her Dad and when they opened the new hall, where I recall Joseph and the technicolour coat was put on,alas I missed it,had the measles!!
