Living In Sunbury During The Sixties

A Memory of Sunbury.

Mum, Dad & I lived in Sunbury during the sixties.
I attended Nursery Road Primary before going on to Kenyngton Manor Secondary.
Some of my favourite teachers were Mr Penfold (French) Mr Lucas (Geography) Mrs Pudney (English) Mr Thomas (PE) & Ms West (Maths).
School excursions took us to the Planetarium, St Albans & Winchester to name only a few destinations.
Living so close to Heathrow Airport made it very easy for those of us interested in aircraft spotting to spend many a day during school holidays on top of the Queens Building.
For me it was the 237 from outside the Three Fishes to Feltham & then catch the 285 to Heathrow.
During the football season it was again the 237 to Hounslow, walk to Hounslow West to catch the tube to Earls Court, then change for Fulham Broadway & a short stroll to Stamford Bridge.
There I would watch my heroes who included Peter Bonetti, Eddie Macreadie, John Hollins, Bobby Tambling, Charlie Cook & the legendary Peter Osgood.
Over the course of time I've lost contact with all of my school mates & the fact that my family & I returned to Australia in 1969 further impacted on this.
Some that come readily to mind are Ronald Murphy, John Carpenter, Patrick Kearney, Alan Dean, Michael Didsbury, John Holmes, Michael Moody & David Kaye. For those of you reading this & whom I have not listed, it is simply that my memory is not what it used to be 49 years ago!
I was especially envious of David Kaye in as much as cricket was my summer time passion & David & his older brother lived adjacent to Sunbury Cricket Club for whom they both played.
My Dad & I played for the Minimax Cricket Club & upon its closure the Feltham Cricket Club. Again it was the 237 that ferried us to both grounds.
Upon leaving school my first job was at Teddington Auto Controls (aka British Thermostat) before going to work for Birds Eye Foods in Walton on Thames, my trusty bike providing the transportation.
In summation, Sunbury holds very fond memories though now long ago.

Robert, I lived in Shepperton in the 1960s and went to school in Hampton but remember Sunbury well . . . John Carpenter and David Kaye. My first job was as a reporter on the Middlesex Chronicle and used to get the 237 to work in Hounslow. I also played football at the Gaflac sport ground for Sunbury Celtic with one Gordon Hill (among others) who went on to play for Millwall and Manchester United. Happy days, mate!
I remember Sunbury Cross and the Thames. Also the AEC RF buses from Kingston to Staines
