More about this scene

Surbiton Common was the scene of one of the last episodes of the English Civil War in 1648. The war was but all over when a Surrey-led rebellion of Royalists, with many recruited from Kingston, were attacked by Parliamentary forces on the common. Lord Francis Villiers, younger brother of the Duke of Buckingham, was killed in the skirmish. Villiers Road and King Charles Road were named after this battle.
