Sherman Ferris`s bakery (left) used to stock ice cream, and was therefore much-frequented by children. It also evidently stocked Daren bread - a popular Hovis-like brand in its day. The thatched roofs in the distance are still there, appropriately enough: the town`s name means `place where thatch comes from`.

My great grandmother lived at 14 Newbiggen Street, just on the righthand side of this photo. A couple of the stories I know about the place are: The doctor would come from Saffron Walden to see the Thaxted people and then send the prescriptions over on the bus.
