Thornborough, North Yorkshire In 1950's
A Memory of Thornborough.
My grandparents lived at The Bungalow, in Thornborough & I would look forward with excitement to our visits (from Middlesbrough) during school holidays.
Me & my sister enjoyed the outside freedom that we did not have in Middlesbrough.
I remember the bus that used to arrive each week on a Thursday at 2pm to take villagers to Ripon. The 4pm bus from Ripon brought them back again.
The village was visited by a butchers van & the travelling Coop van, although I am not sure how often they visited.
All other purchases were made at Mrs Carter's shop - the only shop in the village.
There was a lady in the village who used to visit the cottages selling patterns & haberdashery. She actually lived in the village.
A great highlight to us was playing at Almack's farm, at the top of the village, with the farmers children.
We also attended the Methodist Church on a Sunday, with its enclosed boiler in the centre & a loud ticking clock that punctuated the waiting silence.
I have lots of precious memories & I hope that this little account may prompt others to add to it.
