A Long Time Ago!

A Memory of Tiffield.

Hi everybody, only just found this site and so interesting to read the comments.

I was at Tiffield in the old Victorian "fridge" they called the main building from early 1957 to approx middle 1959. Mr Turner was head (nice chap) but he retired and along came Mr Barsby. I had a brute of a stepfather who did not want me around so my time there was not so bad. Teachers names I remember Rev John Hewitt, Mr A Brick, Mr Cliffe, Mr Underwood, Mr Harris. Nearly everyone staying there was in love with either Mr Brick's daughter or Mr Cliffe's. I'm now 77, I wonder if they are still with us. One thing I do remember was the old gym with the pink walls - when you lent on it you got quite an electric shock! I also remember the little tuck shop where once a week you could get goodies. After I had been there a while I was often told to take other boys to the dentists in Towcester - this got around and I was always being asked to smuggle Old Holbourn or Hearts of Oak back in. This had to be done by squashing it right up in my toecaps. By the time I returned I was hobbling like Ghandi!

Names I recall are Terence Fovargue from P'boro and Terry? Horton both good goalkeepers, Christopher Day from Kent, John Reed number 55, John Peyton from Slough? Brian Fowler - great on the billiards table, bodybuilder Edgar- blond with muscles on muscles, poor Norris who had to have hot irons up his hooter and then nearly lost a finger when a fast closing sharp door trapped it, Terry Sage (great footballer), Toseland from Leicester, David Llewellyn from North London, Chambers from Northampton (bumped into him at Northampton auctions 30years later).

I must mention the chef, a big bald Polish? man whose favourite dish was goulash quite good, even if you did find the odd cockroach trying to swim to safety (true, not joking). The football team was mediocre until Mr Underwood came along then he transformed them. Top of the league the following season, even thrashing Bugbrooke Tags 1-5. Apologies if any christian names are wrong also to T Fovargue, 61 years is a long time. To anyone who reads this, take care in these horrible times but we will get through it. All the best, Robert Day A few more names,Marshall,Smith ,Drinkwater,Timson.
