Embarrassing Memory

Civic Square c1960

I remember walking through the square one day getting mum some shopping and I had a kilt on (God knows why) and it fell down to my feet! I have never pulled my skirt up so fast! I just hope everyone who saw it has a bad memory like me now ...

Merchant Navy Days

What a wonderful memory, going from Tilbury to Gravesend when I was on P&O 'Iberia' as a BRS, which was in the 1960s.

For some reason I remember walking by there when I was a kid and thinking how cool everyone looked sitting there drinking their beer....and I can still smell the beer as you walked past.  I am 55 yrs old now and I still have that memory...

I can remember taking the Lemonade bottles back to the little off licence part and getting the money back. I was probably about 9.

Councillor John Feenen 1879-1956

My auntie is the last remaining daughter of John Feenan, if any-one has any memories of John I would love to hear, maybe I could print them and show my auntie, at the age of 81 years now, and the Centenary this year would be great to see...

The Daisy Field

We moved to Stephenson Avenue in 1968. We were The Jackson family. We spent most of our days on the Daisy Field and the park, there was the tennis courts, the bowling green and as well as football pitches we had the cricket ground as well.

Feenan Highway

My father James (Jim) Staples was born in 1925 and grew up on Feenan Highway Tilbury.  (He died in 1998.)
He fought in the Second World War as a Royal Marine.
He emigrated to NZ in 1952.  His siblings were Fred, Elsie, Ivy and Stan.  Fred, Elsie and Stan are now deceased but Ivy is living in New Zealand.
I am very interested in this area of England and would love to hear from anyone who might remember my father or his family.

Dwellings And Hospital , Tilbury RRverside

My nan and grandad used to live in the dwellings near the hospital. Their names were George and Florence ARCHER. Has anyone got any photos of the dwellings or hospital. We cannot find any. My brothers still live in Tilbury.

Called up in Tilbury

I am trying to trace William George (born ?Sept 1928) who was born and brought up in Tilbury. His mother was a widow and he played the piano.
William was called for National Service in spring/summer 1947 and my mum thinks he went in the Navy.
Her last address for him was in Lisbon (Jan 1948).
Can anyone remember him? He is my dad.

'Our Boy's Cafe', Dock Road, Tilbury

When I was six, I moved into 'Our Boy's Cafe' with my mother and grandfather. My uncle, aunt and cousin also lived with us in the accommodation above. It was the last cafe of many along Dock Road, Tilbury, so we had to work really hard to build up a good reputation for a varied menu of good home cooking for the dockers who deservedly needed and expected a square meal - and fast!
The first morning we opened at six a.m. for breakfast. A long queue of dockers formed immediately as far as the door and stretching outside onto the pavement. My mother promptly fainted at this sight, but did recover enough to convince them she could cook a tasty meal - and be entertaining as well!
Seeing the dockers toing and froing on their bikes past our window was quite a sight, like a swarm of bees. At that time, there were fields between Tilbury and Grays and when the men were on the... Read more

School Days

As far back that I can remember, it was the summer of 1934 when I first started school at St Mary's Roman Catholic School in Calcutta Road. I sat next to a friend that I had made (John Toole) Who later in life emigrated to Canada and was killed on a railway crossing in the early 50's. I recall the first bell that was sounded at school and we both thought it was time to go home which we did. However some 30 miniutes or so later we were marched back to school by our parents and given a polite telling off.
When the bell sounded it was time for play and not going home.
I can remember some of the Teachers names but they were mostly nuns and they lived at the Convent which was in the school grounds and also the church.
There was sister Margaret Mary, sister Borgia. sister Teresa sister Bernadette and the priest was father O'Donnel whom we all loved - he would visit us... Read more
