My Years In Tring

A Memory of Tring.

I was born at Aylesbury Hospital in 1948 and lived briefly at Pitstone, then Tring in Park Road and later Western Road. My Parents, Grandparents and many other relatives lived in the town. I attended Gravelly infant school in Park Road then Tring C of E Junior school under the headship of Miss Baker, who we were all terrified of! I went to Ashlyns school Berkhamsted and left school in 1964, joining John Dickinson's at Apsley.
My early memories of Tring revolve around the wonderful countryside, Stubbins and Park woods, sledging on the Downs, bike rides to "The Ressies" to go for a swim, and hours spent at Whitecloud Farm with a friend Philip Bass, Those were wonderful days, my parents had no concerns if I disappeared for the day and came back filthy dirty having climbed trees and made camps in the woods. Imagine that now!!
I was a member of Tring Church Choir from the age of 6 or 7, with my great friend Colin Stevens. Later I joined Tring Choral Society and was a founder member of The Vale Gilbert & Sullivan Society. Music was and is a very important part of my life.
We moved to Solihull in the Midlands in 1984 but I retain very fond memories of my hometown and still keep in touch with the many friends from the town. We don't get down to Hertfordshire as much as we should but when we do it really is as if we had never left.......

I was born in the Royal Bucks hospital Aylesbury on 16th March 1958 (mother’s day) as a baby I lived in West passage Tring, then 2 Church Lane. With my paternal grandparents, Arthur and Sarah Butler, whilst my mother was in hospital for 6 months. My grandmothers maiden name was Fowler (related to the Fowler’s who contributed to the books about old Tring). I lived with my parents after mums stay in hospital at Stratton place (opposite Goodliffes shop) I have colour cine film footage next to Goodliffes and looking up towards Church Lane circa 1961, to date this is the only moving film of old Tring I have ever seen and wondered if anyone else has any?
