In the 17th century, Judge Fell and his wife, Margaret, lived at Swarthmoor Hall, which is part Elizabethan and part Jacobean. She was converted to Quakerism after seeing how George Fox was evicted from the parish church. Later, after becoming widowed, she married him, and Swarthmoor Hall still holds some of their possessions.
