More about this scene

During the Civil War, the bridge over the Severn at Upton was of strategic importance to forces investing Worcester. In 1651 Edward Massey, who had held Gloucester for Parliament during the First Civil War, joined King Charles II at Worcester. Realising the threat posed by the bridge, Massey attempted to secure it for the King, but was seriously injured in doing so. The King's forces at Worcester was thereby robbed of its most able field officer.
