Nostalgic memories of Eltham's local history

Share your own memories of Eltham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

From 1950 to about 1956 (was 5_11 yrs old) lived at 149 Footscray Rd which was a converted coach house very near the TA drill hall. Often kept awake by the rifle practice. House now demolished and replaced by little close of houses (according to Google) . Then at #231 for a couple of years then moved away and haven never been back. My best memories were of playing in 'the fields' from Eltham to Avery Hill. I would love a photo of that part of Footscray Rd at that time
My dad worked at the Express Dairy bottling depot opposite side of the road to the church. I often went to watch and be treated to a drink in their canteen, as a child I found it fascinating watching the bottles being cleaned and refilled with milk. Unfortunately, it was closed and moved to Morden in Surrey so Dad had to travel there everyday on his motorbike!
I lived in Kingsground and attended Kings Park School. My friends were Harry Clarke, Charlie Walters, Bobby Hunt, Audrey Foster, Brian Willouby and Betty Finch. My teachers were Miss Langton, Miss Shipman, Mr Retallack, the Headmaster was Mr Goldsmith. My father was a well known boxer, Sid Burn. On many occasions Henry Cooper (famous boxer) and his brother George would visit my dad at home, just after the war. ...see more
I have been hunting around trying to find details of The Animals band's concert at Eltham in the mid 1960s. My family moved to Lee Green in the mid 60s, I moved to Kidbrooke School for my final two school years, and my sister and I used to go dancing at Eltham. I've never forgotten the day a school friend said The Animals were playing at Eltham. Her older sister knew one of them (I have no idea ...see more
I loved crossing the white bridge which led to Mottingham horse stables, as I was horse mad! Sometimes when quite young (7 or 8) a steam train would go underneath the bridge and I loved the smell of the steam and the fog!
My family moved to Eltham about 1954/5 and I lived there until about 1966. I attended Middle Park Primary School and later the Gordon School. We lived next door to Working Mens Club on Eltham Hill just down from the Swimming Baths. Have lots of memories of my childhood there. I did a paper round before school and worked at the newsagents in Eltham on Sundays, on Saturdays I worked at the Central Cafe ...see more
I was an apprentice at Madame Herberts Hairdressers in 1958 to 1961, the salon was next to Hinds. Does anyone remember the salon? Mrs Hawkins of Hummerstone and Hawkins, Estae agents, was Madames daughter. We had to address each other by our surnames with the Miss or Mrs prefix. I went to Mottingham girls school prior to that, my step-grandparents lived at Court Farm Rd. Does anyone remember Olives Cafe ...see more
I was delighted to realise that I attended the same school, Middle Park Primary, as Boy George, though considerably earlier - 1940-41 approx. This brings me to my question; does anyone remember the doodlebug that fell near the school one day, burying some of us in the underground shelters? I distinctly remember being dug out, unharmed, to see a playground full of anxious mothers and dazed children. Dorothy. Mail me on pete887271@yahoo.co.uk if you remember this. Thanks.
My nan lived at 11 Basket Gardens, which was near the pleasaunce, and she would take us there when we visited her. It was a wonderful place, my favourite being the stepping stones which led through a small stream, My school, the Gorden, was at Wellhall and I would spend my lunch breaks there when I was older. The last time that I visited it with my father it was rather run down, so I wrote to the local council who ...see more
As a child we lived in the Vista and our back garden ran alongside the cow fields, my friends and I would go across the farm to get into the palace grounds. There was a swimming pool that had dirty water in that was perfect for collecting frogs spawn and the bluebells were amazing! Sadly I decided to show my mum and dad this special place and they were horrified how dangerous it was! and I was never allowed there ...see more
