Nostalgic memories of Eltham's local history

Share your own memories of Eltham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I spent my first Christmas away from home with the Murdoch family as I was invited by their daughter, Monica. I was in the ATS and a colleague of Monica in Ibex House, in the Minories. It was quite an experience for me and my first time going to Midnight Mass (at home my parents went and I had to stay home with my younger brother). It was frosty and I believe it had been snowing, but Mrs Murdoch made sure I was well ...see more
Just wanted to say that I love your website. I moved to Canada last year from Windsor, Berkshire but my grandfather Fred Tutt lived in Eltham for many years (owned a fishmongers). He was there along with his sister Barbara and as a boy, right through to my 30s (now in my 40s), I spent time there. Causing trouble in the High Street mainly.  Parents also were married in the church at the bottom of the High ...see more
This photo was taken at the time I was at Shooter's Hill GS and my stepfather was stationed here as it was the HQ for the RAEC (Royal Army Education Corps). As officer's family we occasionally visited the Palace, which had then an amazing billiards room in the cellar. On my 18th birthday I was treated to dinner in the great hall with the other officers .. a strange experience for me altogether ... my stepfather ...see more
The Hinds Department Store on the right is no more. I remember it well from my childhood in the 1950s and 1960s when we shopped in Eltham, but lived in nearby Welling. You could buy everthing there. It turned into Allders, but was demolished a couple of years ago. Now in 2008 it is just a building site. Dolcis Shoes is now I think a charity shop. And the RACS, the Co-op, which was in the high street until last year ... is boarded up! Times change!
I was brought up in Eltham and lived at no 30 High St where my Mother & Father had a bicycle & sports shop.Everyday I would go across the road to the swimming baths, and at that time there was the vicarage on the opposite corner of Sherrard Road, next to the vicarage gardens was Carter Pattersons who had their horses stabled there. As did the RACS behind Hinds department store. I ...see more
Just being dropped off at Hamoe School down on Westhorne Avenue, having Mr.Greytricks as our headmaster. Playing on the climbing frame in the play ground, then shifting myself to Eltham Hill School up on the hill. God, walking that hill in all kinds of weather done me in! Then becoming one of the faces of Eltham in 2000 and then drinking in the pubs up and down the High Street up until 2003. Then I moved away and ...see more
I lived at 6 Eltham High Street, my dad ran the off licence there.  Every morning before school or the shop opened he would take me to the swimming baths. I went to Roper Street school until I was 10.  We moved to Canada in 1973, I still think about Eltham quite often.  I loved it there.
