Nostalgic memories of Eltham's local history

Share your own memories of Eltham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I grew up in Avery Hill, Eltham, and later in Mottingham. My grandmother lived in Kingsground in the 60's and 70's. She lived in a 2 bed flat with a very long garden. I always used to think, thats the sort of place I'd like to live in when I grew up. Happy memories!
As a child I lived with my parents in a prefab in Corelli Rd SE3. We used to walk through the Brook estate, passing more prefabs to reach the Coronet Cinema in Well Hall. On a Sunday we sometimes watched dad play bowls at the Pleasaunce. During the 1960s I lived in Kingsground with my young family, looking out to Mitchells farm, not sure if this still exists. Happy days!!
Has anyone any memory of the above - did you work in a corset shop (or own) or the corset department of a store? What was your relationship with your customers and what was their relationship with their foundation wear? Did mums bring daughters? No matter how wacky or off the wall, I need your memories. During the 1950's / 60's we had a lot of single sex schools - did a Mum bring (or buy) foundation wear for her ...see more
My mum is from Eltham, Ann Diamond, born 1935. Her dad, Frank Diamond was one of 11 and his mum, my great nan, lived till she was nearly 100, in the same house I believe. I was the 89th grand-child, so no doubt there are a lot of decendents. My mum went to Eltham Secondary briefly. Before that she was in a childrens home in Newbury. I will try and show her some of these great pics. She moved to Portsmouth when she was 17.
I often used to go dancing at Eltham Swimming Baths in the winter with my boyfriend, Frank Fellows, who I later married in 1954. I remember the bandleader Ted Heath performed there. So many happy memories. Lived in Mottingham Village, I was then called Sylvia Street. My father owned a shoe repair shop.
Mr and Mrs Noble must have been your father and mother. My mother, Mrs Clare, had known Mrs Noble from childhood and then lived in Kingsground, just down the hill. She weekly went in for a chat so my brother and I would be with her. Oh, for a cycle shop like that NOW!!!! The wonderful smell of real rubber, light oil and seeing real chrome. Looking for a bike recently it's all mountain bikes, which I hate, so no bike for me then! best wishes
This should be of interest, I hope. I attended Roper Street C of E Primary School from 1944 to1947, Head teacher, Mr Hatt and class teacher Miss Sexton. Brian Tutt was in this class. Sadly he contracted Polio in 1947 and was kept alive in an iron lung. I have a class photo dated 1947 and, of course, Brian is in it. I do not have a printer but can send you a copy via our local library if you let me have an email address, ...see more
Until I was 10 years old we lived in Kingsground. From a rear window, one looked across "the bull's field" to the palace. I LOVE it!! At Eltham C of E Primary School we were educated in Eltham's history, NOW I think I know everything there is to know about all of it, from the arrival of the Saxons to William, to his gift of Kent to brother-in-law, Bishop Odo, and Odo's gifting it to Haimo. I remember the restoration ...see more

I remember visiting my Aunty Pat and all my cousins, they lived at the top of Wellhall Road just down from the old pictures opposite them. She had lots of girls, some blond, and one son, David or Michael I think, their dad was a Scotsman. My mum was Sheila Gillespie, she was born in that house and all her sisters, Maureen, Bertha, and Eileen. She went to Gordon School. Their dad was called John ...see more
