Nostalgic memories of Little Sutton's local history

Share your own memories of Little Sutton and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I am now living in Canada. I went to St Josephs College, Ledsham from 1956 to 1961.. wondering if anyone else remembers?
My mum has a postcard with an address of Carlton Hall, Little Sutton, Chester written about 1912 to her aunty Dilys de vere Potts. Her granny had grown up in Little Sutton, she was a pianist and was called Queenie Amelia Howard; she married twice to a Mr Potts and a Harry Frith. Does anyone know anything about Carlton Hall or where it was?
I attended St. Joseph's College in nearby Ledsham and one day Brother Brown walked us all down to Rivacre Baths, which was absolutely freezing! Another school was visiting at the same time and offered to take us part of the way back on their double decker bus, which was welcome, but we found their kindness a bit surprising as it was a Protestant school. Life was less ecuminical in those days!
Delighted to find photographs of the Rivacre Lido. I moved to Canada in 1966 after being born and raised in Liverpool. Most Sundays in summer my late parents and their friends' took us kids to a variety of outdoor lidos/swimming pools in and around Merseyside. Rivacre Valley stands out from the rest as being the most relaxing lido for the adults in our group, and for vivid memories of the brickwork, plants and flowers surrounding the pool.

I am wondering if anyone can tell me the following; I am trying to find out what year the Prestyberian ittle school was built. I know it was up nearer the old original Black Lion, but can anyone give me a date as to when it was built, or a picture, many thanks.
I attended this school from 1928 for 8 years, from aged 6 to 14. The school master was Mr Brakewell who lived in the school house with his wife and 2 daughters. One teacher was Mr Seth Hughes, who later became the head teacher, also Miss Thomas from Neston. Someone had to ring the school bell, by pulling the rope, every morning. We used to go to Ellesmere Port once a week on the train for a wood working ...see more
Does anyone out there still remember Hopleys Yard on the corner of Kings Road? Being one of the Hopley clan I worked there with most of my family in the 40's and 50's. Most of us lived on Kings Road too. My siblings were Frances, Marion, Edwin, Walter and Rob. Francis and Edwin lived in Sutton until the 1990's. Now 88, I have really enjoyed reading all the memories on the site, found by my daughter and I will be commenting on them in the future.
Does anyone remember the tobacconists owned by my Uncle Alec Basnett...opposite the Co-op??Johanna Webster.
