Cowley Mill Road

A Memory of Uxbridge.

So many memories of Uxbridge - I lived in Cowley Mill Road - two doors away from The Black Prince pub run by Mr & Mrs Guest - still remember the smell of beer and the delivery vehicles. Then opposite was a bakers (first owner I remember was a lady who went to Australia Mrs Lee) it then became Satchwells. Then on other corner was a grocer (think it was Mr & Mrs Hawked who had a very posh car). Further up was Mr Dulsons shop in corner of Bridge Road. I started Whitehall Infants in very late 50s and there were 2 entrances - one for boys and one for girls - I then went on to the juniors - the air raid shelters were still in the sports field but are long gone now. I remember a Peter Sellers film being made in Cowley Mill Road - The Long Arm of the Law - all very exciting and my house is in it (albeit briefly) - so many, many memories.

I used to go to Whitehall School with Vernon Guest the son of the Landlord and his friend John Green ( a very tall lad) whose father was the landlord of the pub in Waterloo Road. The name of that pub escapes me now (age) but I do remember it had a licence that only allowed it to sell Beer (no spirits). That seems strange now. I also remember watching the Peter Sellers Film being made in Cowley Mill Road. I did my apprenticeship at a firm called BMJ which was behind Hale Hamilton Ltd on the corner of Cowley road and Cowley Mill Road. Very handy for me as lived in Walford Road nearby.
hello and nice to hear your comments - I remember Vernon Guest but he was quite a bit older than me i think - i remember him as a grown up. i remember Mr and Mrs Guest very well - i also remember tge pub cloding down as (even though under age) i was allowed in - very emotional - dont think i had seen men cry before, Mr Guest was very upset! I think they moved to Waterloo Road - near to Mrs Ethel Stevens, who used yo be a friend of my grandmother and grandfather who lived inbetween The Black Prince and my house. I remember her as quite a character and often think of her although i do not know much about her really. i know Walford Road and know Hale Hamilton - a boy in my class at Whitehall used to live in the first house where i think you may have gone to work - his name was Darrel or Darren?? i think the dad was a mechanic or something. i dont remember John Green by name or description but sure i must have seen him. Do you remember Satchwells the bakers? They had a daughter Lynn - a bit older than me abd lots of sons - we used to get the mis-shaped buns to eat - lovely! hope to exchabge more memories with you soon?
Hi... there is an excellent collection of stills from the film The Wrong Arm of the Law... many from Cowley Mill Road. I recently watched the film and became interested in the location when I saw the road sign. The web site is www.reelstreet.com. My only family connection is that my aunt and uncle lived and worked at St John’s Hospital, I think Kingston Lane... I visited them from Kensington 1965 to 1967. However my main reason for posting is to draw your attention to the Reelstreet site. Hope it helps with those memories.
