Cross Street , which connected Windsor St with Vine St, was obliterated by road development in the late 60's. The white building (front right) was originally The Catherine Wheel Inn, built in the 1500's and I believe the oldest building in Uxbridge apart from the church. Though the picture is dated c1965, looking up Windsor Street on the left hand side either 3 or 4 shops up was my uncles 'glass and glazing shop' - his name was David Munn. Some years later he moved the shop to the shopping parade at the top of Long Lane, Hillingdon.
Not sure if anyone reads their comments later in life, but in response to one, it was Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers. Cliff lived in Long Lane, next door to where I lived when I was 3 or 4. We lived in the flats on the corner of Sutton Court Road. Though me and my mates lived in Hillingdon, Uxbridge was the place to be. Me and my mates were at Burtons every Friday after 'Ready Steady Go' on TV. I met the love of my life there, but never worked out. I still have great memories of that place, ??? Bennet and the Rebel Rousers, Brian Poole and the Tremeloes. It was a great place, even the woman on the door knew who was and who wasn't a member, and then there was RAF Club, Hammersmith Palais, and one of the best, that closed in the ...see more
