What fantastic memories I have of growing up in Welling. I was brought up in Clifton Road which was opposite the Guy Earl of Warwick pub. I went to Primary School at Fosters which was in Northdown Road then (it has since moved to Westbrook Road). I then went to Elsa Road Boys School and I was there from 1955 to 1959. I remember working in the bingo hall which was the Odeon cinema. I started working there when I was19 in 1961. I worked there as receptionist, sorting all the memberships out for people before it opened in the Jan 1962. I left there in March 1963 when I got married. My step-father, Dennis Wood, was the Manager of the Odeon Welling until it's closure in 1962. I remember racing around the empty cinema and getting the projectionist, Ken, to put on my Cliff Richard records and going and sitting in an empty cinema and listening to it. Saturday Morning pictures were a treat because I didn't have to pay! Heartbreaking to see the state of the cinema now, indeed the state of Welling High Street.
