Westwood Secondary

A Memory of Welling.

I lived at 111 Danson Crescent right by the gates to Danson Park, I went to Westwood School and played for their football team this would have been in the early sixties. I used to sell the Evening news and Standard papers on the corner of Welling high St next to the bank. At sixteen I got a job in London and I remember walking up Danson Cres then up to the train station every morning and evening. That was a long walk, and of course I would usually be late catching the 5 past 8 train to London Bridge station. 1966 I moved to Vancouver Canada where I operated my own business.
I will be returning to Welling May this year 2017 and try and do the same walk up Danson Cres to the train station, may be a little tougher now at 71 years old

Hi. Great to read your memories of Welling, I guess I must have past you selling paper on "the corner" I worked in the menswear dept of the co- op and passed the corner daily. I also met my girlfriend off the bus at the stop opposite on a Saturday evening, who also worked in the co-op on the record counter. I am now 73, but still have clear fond memories of welling. They were good times, unlike the sad situation now. Hope you enjoyed your return visit. Many changes, the co-op has gone, and many of the fine shops etc. But the place still has remnants of the good old welling. Best wishes. Peter Harris.
Hi Peter,
Just got back from Welling, now back in Canada. Yes I did notice lots of changes, Danson Park looked much the same as did our old house on Danson Cresent. My mother used to work in the Co-op, that must have been in the early 60s her name was Marjorie Blaker. We also went to Bexleyheath that was by mistake as the train didn't stop at Welling. So we walked from Bexleyheath station through Danson Park then to Welling high St. That was quite the workout, but fun for my wife as she has never seen all of that before. We may go back again in the near future.
Hi. Thanks for your reply. I was working in the co-op in the early sixties, do you know which department your mum worked in, as I don't recollect her name.
Hi, i see you went to Westwood, we have a school group on Facebook for ex pupils of Westwood. For anyone who went to the senior school and started in the september 1969 or before right back to the early days. You are very much welocme to join us to chat about your days at Westwood with fellow ex pupils.
I have posted a link below to take you to the group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/525102441001656/?fref=nf
I was the hockey captain at Westwood 1963/1964 we were not beaten in that season, something to be proud of. Favourite teacher Miss MacDonald (geography) best teacher Mrs Martin (history) followed close by, by Miss Jarvis (games)who gave me such confidence to face the world!
Hi I use to help my mate do a paper round delivering the evening news/standard. We got our papers from welling corner . Probably would have been about 1964ish enjoyed your memories
Best wishes
