13 Park Lane, Wembley

A Memory of Wembley.

Hello everyone

Wow what a joy and pleasure to find this site. I didn't realise this existed until a short time ago.

Anyway for some years I've been trying to locate (on Google maps streetview) the old house that was once owned by my grandfather in the 50s until the 60s, 13 Park Lane, but without success. Of course buildings change over the years so that doesn't help plus my mother died in January but before she did, she told me that at some stage, all the numbering in Park Lane changed and she thought it was now in the 100s or possibly 150s, which meant I've been looking in the wrong place, so no wonder I couldn't find it! :)

I was born in the maternity hospital in Willesden in November 1953 and we lived in 13 Park Lane until I was almost 5 years old (1958). I can picture the garden AND the inside of the house in my mind's eye very clearly, despite my young age. I remember it was opposite or close by to the far end small entrance to King James VII park and I also used to attend a small nursery/kindergarden school close by too, although I don't recall exactly where or what it was called but after school, we used to walk in 2 lines behind the teacher holding on the coat tails of the person in front and then be shown over the road to our houses. I must have been one of the first?

For years afterwards, once the Wembley Conference Centre was built, they started putting on the Bensons & Hedges Masters once a year in January or February and I used to go up and stay with my Aunty Mary (sadly now deceased) where she lived in Wylde Way and I used to walk to and from her house for the 4 or 5 days it was on so I remember the High Street well too.

So does anyone out there remember Park Lane back in the 50s or 60s who might remember which number is where 13 once was? I know it's a big ask as it's rather specific and unless you lived in the road or have specific memories of the place, you're unlikely to know but if you do, I'd be very grateful indeed for ANY information you might have. After my mother died, she gave me a large box of photographs and when I get time I want to go through them and if by some chance I have any photos, I'll happily post them and share them with the rest of you.

Thank you kindly for listening to my ramblings. My fingers are tightly crossed that there might be someone out there who knows and will post. Nick.

Comments & Feedback

I would just like to say that thanks to some email feedback from Jenny Drinkeld with some suggestions, and a LOT of invaluable help and assistance from Philip Grant of the Wembley History Society, I was able to discover that the house in question is now 167 Park Lane. He kindly showed me a photograph of it taken in the 60s before the renumbering scheme and/or development scheme took place there, held by Brent Museum Archives. I would love to add it here but of course without permission, I am unwilling/unable to do that but I wanted to let you know that I am very grateful for their help and assistance in this matter and that now my little mystery has been solved. Now I'm waiting to hear from the land registry to see what history they may hold. When I hear from them, I hope to share some interesting snippets again. :)
