A High Road And Trading Estate

A Memory of Wembley.

I was born in 1940 three days before,so I have read,a massive bombing raid over London on 29th September. We lived in Lancelot Court and then Harlesden for twenty years.Spent a lot of time in Wembley as Mother worked in Lyons teashop, known to the girls as Rose and they all wore turbans as did most women Isaw in catering.Meat patty or pattie and chips and ice cream sat by the window to look at the roof of the trolleybuses on the 662 passing by.
She then worked at Claudgen the neon people in the canteen run by Mr.Cunningham who kept a spotless kitchen,I remember the smell of disinfectant as I waited to be treated to the pictures at Regal and Wembley Hall now showing on Tv as Talking Pictures.
Each Saturday morning a trip to the newsagent at Wembley Triangle where a very nice lady had copies of the Eagle and Beano for me.Amazing reading Dan Dare in the Eagle 1950 landing on the Moon in 1970! and seeing a mint copy no.1 issue selling for £7000 at Chisties a few years ago.
Now and again I was sent to Jax a shop near Wembley Central to buy 15 denier nylons kept under the counter at 17/6d,what a lot of money, did they come from America?
