Essex memories

Mid 70s

Hi, we moved to Galleywood in the mid 70s and my mum Valerie went to work in the White Bear but unfortunately don't have any photos of it in the 70s.

The Bear Inn

My name used to be Marilyn Jesse and my memories of stock back in the late 60's early 70's are delightful. Since my boyfriend of the time lived next door to the Bear Inn, the pub became a bit like home from home. Many weekends were spent in the lounge bar with the roaring, wood, fire warming all who entered from the cold british winters. The aroma of the true sunday, english, lunch wafted from the kitchen to the delight of the local patrons, followed by an extremely full, satisfied stomach and a half pint of real guiness to wash it all down. Many evenings were spent with the guys from 'DEAR MR TIME' Barry Everitt the lead singer lived next door, which is why I was able to enjoy the village stock experience for a few years. Village cricket on the green, walks through the churchyard and over the fields after lunch, chats with locals along the way........
The village hall with its variety of entertainment. one of them... Read more

Harrow Farm

My grand x3 grandfather James Sewell lived at Harrow Farm, he worked as a farm labourer. There was land named Sewells land which was auction by the Boggis estates and sold in 1914. Another ancestor, James, was a publican and wife Emily worked at the 'Leather Bottle' pub on the Downham Road. I have ancesters buried in St Peter's churchyard and also married at Downham. I wonder if anyone knows what happened to the land, farm or pub?

Straw Hats Every Sunday

I was sent to a children's home in Great Baddow when I was about twelve. My memorys are sad and happy ones. Miss May and Miss Abbs ran the home. Miss May I remember had a Boxer dog and many years later I bought one in memory of Great Baddow children's home. We used to go to the local church dressed in our uniforms and little straw hats on our heads, is there anyone out there that remembers 1950/51. I used to tell everyone I was an orphan, it sounded better than not being wanted from the age of 3 yrs and many foster parents, no regrets. I have had, and continue to have, a happy life, not in riches but a good marriage and good health, and sad memories of not being ever to say these two words, mum and dad. I remember running away from the home when I first went there as I needed to find mum and dad.. I never did, Vicky, nee Morrisson.

Growing up in Great Baddow

I moved to Great Baddow with my parents when I was four and we lived in Gowers Avenue, No. 2. This estate belonged to the Marconi Company and my father worked at Baddow Labs. I used to walk up there to meet him from work when I was older.

When I was about 11 they build on the lovely orchard behind our house, and in the fields above our estate. Before that, we used to walk the dog over the fields and lay in the grass listening to the skylarks. I had a friend called Vivienne who lived opposite, and have lost touch with her. I went back to have a look at the outside of our old house a few years ago and the estate is very much the same as it was, but they have removed some of the trees and shrubs. There were some lovely walks around in the old days but they build on most of the fields before I moved away to... Read more

Can You Help?

Does anyone know of Sylvia Eileen Newman who lived in Great Baddow as a domestic servant in the late 1950s or 1960s? She later moved to Witham. Her surname later became Brewer.

Living There

I was born in Rettendon  in 1938.  My father (Ernest James Hazell) and mother ( Ellen Wiseman)  were both born in the village as were my maternal grandmother and great grandmother.
As a child I remember watching aircraft flying home from bombing raids in Germany with holes in and engines smoking. I remember the V2 that fell in the village and the incendiary raids on Rettendon Place farm that caused the haystacks to burn for days.
I remember the Scottish Regiment staying in Rettendon Hall, and marching down the main road with the pipes skirling. The hill beside Rettendon Hall was hollowed out in the early part of the war to facilitate the building of an underground field hospital to accomodate casualties from an invasion or from continental warfare. As far as I know it was never actually used, and lads from the village would go in and out  to play after the war till the entrances were concreted over or were blown up.
I remember dances in... Read more
