An Old Mill.
A Memory of West Hyde.
In 1949 I and a friend cycled out from Eastcote, just trying to reach beyond the urban sprawl. I know we came to West Hyde. What lead us to the banks of the Grand Union Canal, I fail to remember. About half a mile or so, we came on an abandoned mill. A tall structure was obviously long abandoned. There was still an office and I seem to remember tattered wall paper still on the walls. An old barge was sunk in a slipway. The slipway was full of green slime. Other youngsters were there and larking about. Years later, I did see a reference about the canal and the mill might have been named The Troy Mill.
I used a well known record base and tried to find anything on the 1881 census re employees living nearby in West Hyde- no luck. Always remember the fairly carefree days for 17 year olds post WW2. I would expect no trace of what we saw remains.
