Melville St And The Pigs
A Memory of Wombwell.
I was born at no 3 Melville St in 1947 - which is long gone but not forgotten. The row of houses used to be opposite a butchers factory with a large store adjoining High St. My grandfather used to keep pigs in the garden across the road and every year or so used to kill one - and the whole row, no 3 to 12 were involved in this process - everyone used to get a share. There was a bus garage halfway called Burrows and there were two or three old air raid shelters too. I remember the local sweet shop called Turners where we used to get a penny back for empty pop bottles, about five or six shops from Melville St.
