Warwickshire memories
Growing up Fun!
My memory year was at Willoughby Charity Church of England School, where I remember all the friends I used to live with and went to the same school with. It was good fun, growing up days! Long hot summers, having to find things to do - one week it was making bows and arrows, then conkers, then catching newts in the pond in the field, going A.W.O.L across the fields and not coming back for hours, then in later years buying my first moped and riding for days up on the old railway with my best mate Colin Miller. Oh such memories!
Old Vicarage
My first memory of Willoughby I think was during the 1980s, it was when David Sole of 'Starsky and Hutch' fame rented the Old Vicarage for a stay in England - it was a Saturday night and he had invited villagers to a party that he was holding. As I didn't live in the village at that time I obviously wasn't invited, but I do remember the feeling of excitment, and I did see a video of him and his guests going along Lower Street, Willoughby. I'm sure some residents who live in Willoughby will have clearer memories of the party than me, there must be some residents who actually went to the party.
St Peters Church Gates
Hi
hope someone can help, there is great debate going on in dunchurch at the moment. There is no record of when the church gates were put up and we need to find out because English Heritage are trying to stop them from being removed, but the church wants to replace them for security reasons. The oldest member of the congregation (92 years) cant remeber as she was away for most of the war. I have looked at some pictures from the 1950's and they are in place at the time but cant find anything older.
Hope someone can help us resolve this
Thanks
Louise
Almshouses
Wonder if any one can help.
I've family roots in Dunchurch - Mary Shaw 1855 - 1933 and Jane Shaw 1853 - 1943 both died in the Almshouses.
It has always been said that Jane died in mysterious circumstances in a fire.
Does anyone have any info that relates to this?
Douglas Scott
I wonder if someone can let me know the name of the man featured on the statue at the crossroads outside the hotel. I do remember that one of his names was repeated and seem to remember that it was .... Montague-Douglas-Scott. Who was he?
I used to pass that way on my way to and from Rugby High School on the 589 in the 1950s.
Draycote Water
I worked for a company called Biwater, they had the contract to extend the water treatment works situated alongside Draycote Water. To get to the site we had to drive around the lake, what a beautiful place. Trout fishing was allowed by licence. I lived on site and some evenings I'd go into Dunchurch village, another beautiful place. I'd go for a bar snack and pint in the 'Green Man' pub, I will never forget the welcome given by the regulars and owners, also the the local shops and garage I used each day. Many thanks.
Wedding
Not exactly a memory but my mum and dad were married here in 1955. My dad went to the little school that was/is just to the left of this picture ! My grandparents, two uncles and an aunt are buried there now, just to the left!
