Nostalgic memories of Bargoed's local history

Share your own memories of Bargoed and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I was born in Caerphilly Miners Hospital in August 1969 but I grew up in a property called Gladstone Villa with my mother and my grandparents. The property was a council one and it was split into four flats; we lived above the Thomas's at 1a. Mr Beer lived on the other side and would have his motorbike parked on the path, I would often play with the wheel. I lived there throughout the 1970's and my childhood ...see more
I grew up here from 1953 to 1970 when I left the village and went to sea in the Merchant Navy.Born in the only cottage next to the hospital at end of Pant street, but at age of 5 moved to Highfield Crescent where my parents lived all their then lives. I was a paper boy for Cliff Davies, my round was Highfield Crescent and Lewis Street. Used to spend my teenage time in and around Aserattis café, great times with Chris ...see more
Although I was born and raised in Bristol, my dad was born in Bargoed, but not of Welsh parentage as grandparents moved there from Bristol in about 1909. Their 4 youngest children were born there, Dad being the youngest. So, I spent about 2 weeks there during school holidays at my uncle & aunt's house on Park Road. My Nan, who lived with us in Bristol, would take me with her on her visits when we would ...see more
I hope this doesn´t distress anyone - that is not my intention, but does anyone recall the name of the young boy from east view who shot himself ? The reason I ask is, that for many years I lived and played there and hung out with him now and again down Bridge Street, but I never remember his name for the life of me. I live abroad now, but am visiting my valley for the first time in nearly thirty years and I ...see more
I was born, in 1945, in the front room of my parent's rented house in Bristol Terrace, Bargoed. Open the front and you were on the pavement!!. We had no central heating, no double glazing, no indoor bathroom (tin bath hanging on a nail outside), no running water and we used the tepid water from the hotwater bottles on a winter's morning's to wash (ice inside the glass on bedoom windows). My sister and I had ...see more

Does anyone remember the doctor at Bargoed Hall? First it was Dr Thomas E Richards and then later his son, Dr Arthur Richards who died in 1970. My husband used to visit his great grandma at Bargoed Hall in the 60s when he was a very small boy. He says Bargoed Hall (to him) was huge, dark and scary. His great grandma Winifred was an avid collector of antiques and china and the house was full to overflowing ...see more
My sister and I moved into my nan's (Mrs A Morgan ) in 1972 to 1976 and remember the school well, we have a lot of happy memories living in Llancayo Street in the 1970s, it was a nice place to live then and there was plenty to do.
Friday the 8th of April, 1984. The day I met the actor Jon Pertwee when he opened the visiting centre in Deri. I arrived around 10.30 am, the weather was dreadfull, raining, typical,..and Jon Pertwee was 90 minutes late! There were a load of people there and some obvious 'Doctor Who' fans, one dressed in a long scarf! When he finally arrived he made a comment,''Lovely Welsh weather!'' and BBC ...see more
The Parc Hotel aka 'Reds' is located in Cardiff Road in Bargoed, it was once a residential property and was once called 'Gladstone Villa' and was split into four flats, the property and its surounding area has quite a history. It is not quite known how far the building dates back to but one of the early residents, Edgar Mills, claimed it to be haunted! in 1960. The Higgs family moved there but ...see more
