Bexley County Technical School For Girls

A Memory of Bexleyheath.

I attended this school from 1952 -1954 when Miss Collins OBE was Head Mistress. she was very strict but very fair and kind to me having just lost my mother. I seem to remember Miss Odel as the Geography mistress who used to make you stand on your chair if she was cross with you. My form teacher was Miss Cowie. I took Domestic Science and I remember we used to have to clean the Head Mistresses apartment. My name then was Wendy Cawley and my best friend was Barbara Smith. We spent the first year at Wilmington Manor.

1958 to 1962 were the years I went to Bexley Technical school, as it was called then. Mrs Richards was our form teacher (super lady) and we had those form titles, JXCR, XCR, SCXR, denoting which course you were doing. That first year at Wilmington was wonderful. Rehearsing our Shakespeare play down in the wooded area, planting up little gardens, trotting off to Madam Osterburg's for sport and dance. Fabulous memories. All the little badges on my tie - school prefect, form captain, sports captain, haha, not so supple now. Many of the names have slipped my memory after all these years, but not the faces. Where are you now girls? Linda Puplet, Dawn Lang, Sheila Riley, Valerie ? and so on. Happy days.
I was there 1953 to 1956 my form teacher was Mrs Dowd, English teacher Mrs Rea and drama teacher Barbara Hood. I kept in regular touch with Barbara until her death a few years ago. I also met Mrs Rea and her husband when we first came to Australia in 1968. I have often wondered if there was an archive of school photos somewhere.
I was also in Mrs Richards form. Top of stairs on left. Very narrow classroom. I recognize your name Eileen and also Dawn Lang. My name was Pat Cullen. I left in 1961 as we moved. My subjects were shorthand, typing Accounts etc.I also remember a Hazel Trivass, Maureen Potten. Are there any more out there.
In was at the school from 1946 to 1954 during which year I was Head Girl. Many happy memories. I remember going with Dora Collins to Dartford to buy a tea service from donations from the girls in the school in memory of her receiving her OBE. She took me out to a tea with lots of cream cakes. My name then was Jacqueline (Jacky) Burt.
