The Studio Cinema

A Memory of Borehamwood.

In the 1950s, going to the pictures was ‘the-in-thing’, not only did Boreham Wood have its own cinema; it also had its own film studios where they made many of the films that were later shown at our local cinema.
When we first arrived in Boreham Wood we were not aware that there was a cinema in Shenley Road and it wasn’t until about 1953 that we started to attend the performances.
The cinema named the ‘Studio’ was built in 1935 and first opened its doors in 1936.
In 1966 it underwent some alterations and was renamed ‘Studio 70’ and in later years due to poor attendance the final performance was on the 6th June 1981. Sadly the cinema was demolished in December 1981.
I use to love going to the Saturday morning pictures where the films were shown in the morning instead of the late evenings when you normally had to go with your parents; if I can remember, it started around about 9 am and finished at 12 pm.
The films had been selected purely for children’s entertainment, especially serial films like: Superman, the Lone Ranger and Tonto, Hopalong Cassidy (I hated his hat!), Roy Rogers, Zorro, Tarzan, cartoons and newsreels. One of my all time favourites was ‘The Little Rascals’ and not forgetting ‘Popeye!’ Do you have any of you own memories of going to this cinema?
