Brimington In The 50s And 60s

A Memory of Brimington.

I lived on Station Road from 1947 until I got married in 1968. I went to infant school in Princess Street and the only teacher I remember was Mrs Wright.
I then went to the Junior School and finally in 1957 to the Boy's School until 1962 when I left and went to work at The Halifax Building Society in Corporation Street , Chesterfield. My wife and I left Chesterfield in 1971 and finished up,in Stourbridge , via Mansfield, Huddersfield and Glasgow.
I remember most of the teachers at the time I was there Mr Kelly, Mr Bailey,
Mr Wood, Mr Clarke, Mr Staniforth, Mr Leaning,Mr Cannon. Mr Crofts and also probably our most famous old boy John Hickton who went on to play for Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesborough.
I am still Spireites and watch them whenever possible although I don' t get to many home matches. Been to Shrewsbury so far this season and have tickets for Saturday at Coventry.
Sad to learn that the old school has gone and note that Alan Goodall, whose parents had a shop at the top of Station Road ,is now a director of Chesterfield F.C.

I born in Hollingwood and attended Brim Boys 1965 to 1969. 50 years after leaving and I can still remember it well. After leaving Hollingwood junior school were I was physically bullied by the Headmaster Platts, an evil man, he kept hit me across my legs with a splintered ruler until I had blood running down my legs I was 8 years old. But Brim Boys was a different school and for most of the time there I enjoyed it, teachers at the time were Mr Angus geography, Mr Crofts rural science, Mr Rodgers Science, Mr (bronco) Lane History, Mr (plug) Davies English, Mr Clarke Maths, Mr (Clarence) Duvall English, Mr Sharp pe, Graham Pass art, Mr Wood Woodwork, Mr Smith Metalwork, Headmaster Mr (Thrack) Kelly, Mr Banks Music and last but not least the best teacher I ever had a brilliant man Mr Bob Bailey, Technical Drawing. All the teachers were ok Kelly was very strict and would be classed as a racist today, I saw him hit several pupils across the face . Mr Croft was always falling asleep, Mr Rodgers known as Grizz used to have fits and kept disappearing from class, Mr Lane had really
bad breath, so you didn't get to close to him, Mr Smith was a real big head and if I recall right not many people liked him, I hated metalwork and then left school to become an engineer, my time there I was Librarian and then in my last year a Prefect, happy days but at the time didn't think so and couldn't wait to leave, looking back now it wasn't bad at all
