Nostalgic memories of Consett's local history

Share your own memories of Consett and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I attended Benfieldside Junior School to around 1963/64. I think the headmaster was Mr Appleby and my teacher Mr Watchman who was a prisoner of war and taught the class some German (which I still remember!) My family emigrated to New Zealand but the stories of the school and the red dust still touch me.

I drove through Consett in 2007 as my relatives had lived at 22 Medomsley Road at least in 1891 when Sarah Ann Wholah Hutchinson died. One side of the street is old but the other has changed a lot. Her husband John had died some years earlier. They had shifted from Middleton In Teesdale in 1850s. They had children so perhaps some of the family live on. Sarah's brother John Wholah came to Australia and her sister Nancy Wholah has a woven sampler in Bowes Museum.
Hello, my name is John William Penrose and I was born in Bridgehill and attended Benfieldside School. When I first went to school I had leg irons on both legs; I was living with my uncle John and auntie Joyce and my nan Agnes and we later moved to Leadgate to live. My nan died when I was 12 years old and my dad, Edward Wilfred Bell Penrose, did not want his brother to look after me anymore so he came up from ...see more
Does anyone remember Tommy Lancaster - The Pitmans Champion Boxer - He was the Landlord of The Mount Pleasant Hotel Consett until around 1965 (ish)?
I came from Ludlow in 1944 to live with a great aunt & uncle (when I was 13 months of age) in Priestmans Avenue. I started school at The Grove and have many good time memories with friends of that time. As you recall, the winters were bad and the summers so hot that we would burst the tar bubbles with our fingers and sit on the railway enbankment next to the bridge at the top of the bank from the ...see more
