The Old Conker Tree

Church Road c1955
Enlarge photo |  More about this photo

This photo is taken from outside my grandparents house, Church Cottage, Church Road. This old tree caused some stress to my granddad as every year children would come and throw sticks to bring down the best conkers. I left in 1972 aged 14 to go to New Zealand. But this tree brings back great memories. My Great Aunt lived across the road another of your photos. We lived at 13 Fobbing Road. I may be on the other side of the world but this page has brought so many memories.

RE: RE: The Old Conker Tree

I spent first 9 years of my life in Corringham - lived at the end of Vincent Close - I crossed the fields past the Vicarage and the conker trees to go to school and church. I remember my grandfather taking me for walks to the old Bull pub, buying me a packet of crisps with the little bag of salt in, while he had an ale. My family moved to New Zealand in 1961, and only went back to England in 1995 - it was quite weird to walk around the places of my childhood - same smells of Greengage plums brought back memories. Went back to the church where I was a choir boy - I have still got my book with stamps you got each Sunday when you turned up to church.
