A Lad In Blue
A Memory of Croydon.
Around 1959 I appeared on the stage of the Davis as part of a group of Lifeboys a junior group of the Baptist church in Selsdon's organisation The Boys Brigade.
It must have been a Christmas Revue as it was called Alladin Blue or perhaps billed as the title. For people unfamiliar with this organisation it was the first chidrens organisation that was formed before The Scouts.
I started as an Anchor Boy equivalent to the Cubs. Our uniform was a navy beret with a white felt anchor. As a Lifeboy the uniform was a very itchy navy blue, woollen jumper, navy shorts and socks. We wore a sailors hat with a ribbon containing the name Lifeboys. This had to be worn at particular angle with one of the letters around the hat lined up with the nose. The badge worn on the jumper was brass inlaid with blue enamel that i had to clean with Brasso.
On the Revue at the Davis we were just one group from many groups performing and sang a song I can't remember and i couldn't bsck then as the words were pinned on the back of the boy in front of me.
Any errors in my memory feel free to correct as it was about 64 years ago.
