Nostalgic memories of Eltham's local history

Share your own memories of Eltham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

I have great memories of my time in Eltham went to Deansfield Primary School and then on to the Gordon School from 1958 to 1962, when for a short while I was captain of the school boxing team, albeit I think there were only two of us in the team. The early part of my childhood was spent living in a prefab in Southend Cres, then we moved in with my Nan and Pop at 39 Arsenal Rd. Mum worked in the Green Grocers on Eltham High ...see more
Great to read the comments about Eltham. Probably I'm just a whipper snapper by comparison but I lived in Eltham from the early 60's to mid 70's. Lived in Greenway, and often would walk up to the High Street, or maybe take the number 21 bus in bad weather! Fond memories of Haimo Rd School (maybe not for the teachers). Eltham Swimming baths for school swimming lessons that were always ...see more
I saw Dr. Who and the Daleks, in the Summer of 1965 at the ABC (or 'The Picture Palace' as my father called it). I was about 10 years of age. The movie poster showing on the cinema, the support movie anyway, in your photo is Bikini Beach (1964). The picture looks like taken on a summers day, sun shining, clear day, people dressed in summer clothing. Many memories of Eltham.

Been lovely reading through others memories, recognise so many places. I used to live behind the swimming baths and during the winter sit in my bedroom listening to the bands. Couldn't wait until I was old enough to go to the dances there. It was magical, seeing the likes of Ted Heath, Johnny Dankworth any many more was just wonderful. I have lived in Yorkshire for over 40 years now, but will never forget my roots. Patricia Lawrence (Stoneham)

I remember the Pleasauce well. I used to like going through the steppin stones. Further over there was a section which went a bit underground, it was all a big adventure for a child. We sometimes watched shows on the bandstand . Those were the days .
I used to attend Middle Park School way back in 1943. I recall we used to have to write the date in the top right-hand corner of our exercise books and I distinctly remember the year. The war was still on. I'd probably returned from Northhamptonshire, where I'd been evauatived from London for the second time. I used to live in No10 Campfield Road, not far away. I lived there - between being evacuated ...see more
