Nostalgic memories of Gate Burton's local history

Share your own memories of Gate Burton and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

  • How does it feel, seeing these places again, as they used to look?

My name is Nora born at Gate Burton Hall 17 June 1942. My mother was evacuated from Hull as were many other expectant mothers during WW11 due to the heavy bombing which was inflicted on Hull. My understanding is that the Hall was used by the Marfleet Road Maternity Hospital (Hull). I found this information while undertaking family tree research. I've often wondered about the transport arrangements that would have ...see more
Having lost my original birth certificate I have just received a new copy and find I was born at Gate Burton Hall on the 1st April 1944. I have no memories of the Hall but I reckon its why I love the country, I spent my early years in Hull. Pleased to add a photograph of the Hall to my family history
My father was serving at RAF Coningsby and my mother, a WAAF , gave birth to me in Gate Burton Hall. She shared wonderful memories of her time there such as walking around the gardens and exploring the small church. I took her back about fifty years later, it was a very special trip as I’m sure you appreciate. My overwhelming impression is one of peace and happiness , an oasis in a troubled world.
My nan gave birth to her 4th daughter here in April 1943 her husband died during the war so he never met baby Wendy who only survived two years as died of TB. Nan was from hull so presume she was evacuated.

It was July 1941. I always knew it was place called Gate Burton. Only this week did I notice on my birth certificate in very small print it states GATE BURTON HALL. I have nothing to add to this story except, My Mothers name was Hilda Garnett married to my father John, he was killed in the war the Green Howards regiment. I would love to know more....if anyone can add to my birth story. This is a wonderful Day........Carol Garnett.
My mother was evacuated from Hull for my birth in May 1941 to Gate Burton Hall. The only information I have is a picture postcard that my mother acquired during her stay plus my birth certificate. Re any information if that person logs on to GENUKI Gate Burton Lin then scrolls down to manors, clicks on Ian S. entry states that Gate Burton Hall was a maternity unit during World War II
I am Brian Skippers wife & I too was born in 1944 at Gate Burton Hall. After I was born we went to live with the lady who owned the little post office in the village & my mother used to help out to earn our keep. She said how kind everybody was to us. We were then evacuated to Caerphilly in Wales returning to Croydon, Surrey, after the war. I would like to visit Lincolnshire & seek out the places my mother told me about.
