Cindy And Family .... And The Lovely Robert
I remember you all living in the Ferguson's house ... Cindy brought us candy from the base and we would all congregate on the playing field. Robert was such a lovely guy - I still keep a picture of him in my kitchen, and have a t-shirt that he wrote on - it was such a loss when he died ... His sister Le'anne is still around, his brother Reuben still lives in Hilgay - and named his son after Robert. His brother Frank lives in Southery. It's nice that you still remember him, I will tell Le'anne when I see her, she will be pleased. Hope you are all well.
Life in The Country
I was stationed in the USAF at RAF Lakenheath. I resided at Church View, Church Road with my wife, 3 daughters, and our 3 Shelties. My oldest daughter Cindy learned to ring bells at the church and was sweet on a local boy, Robert Pepper, who was killed early in life on a motorcycle. My den turned into a local gathering place for the teens in the village and I thoroughly enjoyed my tour, the people in the town and the wonderful view of the church from our front gardens. I will always cherish the memorys of the English countryside and the Fens.
Hilgay Village Shop
I attended Downham Market Grammar School between 1953 and 1956, when I left to start work. I lived at Fincham, but was a friend of Cedric Peto (whom we nickmamed Pedro). His parents kept the village shop and I used to visit them regularly as a friend of their son. The Petos had a radiogram - the first one I ever came across. Being the 1950s it was the start of the Rock-and-Roll era ,Cedric and I were great fans of the music. He had many of the new records (the old vinyl ones) and we spent many happy hours listening to them in thier living room. We both left school at the same time. "Pedro" was also the first of my class to buy a car. If I remember correctly it was a Morris Minor and we used to tour round the area (I suppose it would be called "posing" these days) looking for girls! Happy Days! Working For Dents Transport
I worked for Dents Transport from September 1986 until late May1998 almost the end of the company. Sad to see it go. I must have enjoyed working for them to have stayed so long, so many stayed much longer. The trouble is there are no photos to commemorate the length of time that Dents ran. A lot of villagers worked for the company.
Stocks Hill
Hi, we have bought a property 75 yards from Ali Dent's the butcher, a little red-brick house in 'The Yard' belonging to a Mr Howlett. I wonder if you remember the cottage? If you're interested I can send you some pictures of the cottage and the area, we find it lovely and rent the cottage to holiday-makers. Have you any pictures?

Living in Hilgay
Hi, My father was in the airforce and we stayed at Hilgay for about 12 months.. I don`t remember much about the stay but I remember we lived next door to Dents, it was a transport company, I also remember going to school, and I have some photos somewhere of a sports day at the school..Sorry I can`t help with more memories.
I now live in Western Australia and happened to find this site while looking around places I have been to.. If I do find th Pics I will send them to you..

Memories of Norfolk
School
My name was at that time, Annette Mothersole. I am the youngest daughter of Doris and Bert Mothersole. My two sisters are Yvonne Rushbrooke and Vivienne York. My dad was a farmer we lived on Poppyloy Farm. and went to school at Southery and till I was about 11 and then moved to Feltwell. My dad was a Capt. in the Southery Home Guard in WW11. I would love to know more about that unit and the men in it. After my dad was in a horrific accident he and my mother moved to a smaller house in Hockworld, but my dad always went to the Bell in Southery on Sat. to have a couple of drinks and to play dominoes and when I was home to see them i went with him. He loved that game!!

Salters Lode c1900 Painting
I have a painting by Charles A Challis c1900 of Salters Lode. I've tried to research him & believe he was a schoolmaster at Salters Lode or nearby.
Childhood And Teenage Years
Downham Market in my younger days was a happy small market town where everyone knew everyone else, in the days before overspill there were lots of small shops, like the bakers Stannards and Slys where you would queue for ages for your bread while everyone caught up with the town news and scandal, and the Regent cinema was very popular and the queue used to be from the cinema to the Coffee Pot public house which is now closed. I remember the airfield at Bexwell and airmen being in town, Stow Hall which is now demolished was used as a convalescent home for troops who had been injured in action during the Second World War. With my brother and sisters and friends we used to go blackberrying in the Cock Droves which now unfortunately is spoilt by buildings. We used to stop at Mrs Butcher's for a drink of fresh water from her water pump, the Butcher family had a smallholding in Cock Drove. Mrs Butcher would always be leaning... Read more
Delivering Coal
