Nostalgic memories of Horsham's local history

Share your own memories of Horsham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Hello to you all, I'm hoping that someone can help with some research I'm currently doing on a stoneware pot I recently bought printed with the name H J Piggott, 45a and 46 West Street, Horsham. I've included a link to a photo of the pot and hope it stirs a few recollections. I seem to recall a shed in the middle of the square in Horsham that was done up as a stable with a real donkey in it for Christmas - Does anyone else remember that? Does anyone know if Denne Parade still exists too? My father, Raymond Mayo was boarding there while he worked for the Armament Establishment.
I joined Horsham Sea Cadets IN 1973, I am a CPO at the unit at the moment. Is there anybody who knows the date when the Horsham Sea Cadet unit opened in 1942. It was then called T.S. UNA. during the 1960`s it was changed to their present name T.S. GLORY. We know it was our birthday this year but no one knew when exactly when the unit opened. We know it was named after the Submarine HMS Una which was paid for ...see more
This was the year I left school. I started working for l.Standing and Sons of Hampers Farm in Station Road. They had one Ford van, five horses with various milkfloats. It was quite different for a fifteen vear old who was not really fond of horses, however I was introduced to them and they were not as bad as I thought. As I became more settled into the routine, I enjoyed the open air life. I had a round of my own ...see more
What wonderful memories seeing this photo brings back. My aunt and uncle (Mr and Mrs J Piggott) ived at 6a Bishopric until it was modernised in the 1960s. Although the front door was between the sweet shop and Millidges all the rooms were spread over the first floor. It was a wonderful spacious flat having a large lounge overlooking the Bishopric as didtwo2 of the bedrooms and to the back the other rooms overlooked the ...see more
I started my first job as apprentice upholsterer for S Bonella & Sons, they started in Billingshurst, but moved to Swan Yard in Horsham and then to Denne Parade in the 1970s. I worked there for twelve years, and still was good frends with the familly, we had a policeman on our beat, PC Palmer, who came in most weeks to see if all was ok. Good times in Horsham.
I remember the underground toilets in the Carfax.
When I got married to my beautiful girl I stayed with her family for two months till we found our own flat. What a nice place the Littlehaven area is, I will never forget it for the rest of my life.
I am just looking this picture of St Mary's church and tears are coming to my eyes as I remember the wonderful waiting that I had in this church. I am from Greece but as I fell in love with this lovely girl from Littlehaven I came to England in 1997 and I got married to her. But what shall I say? Our marriage didn't work out as she was only 17 years old and I was a foreigner and ...see more
