Nostalgic memories of Hulme's local history

Share your own memories of Hulme and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

My grandfather remembers going to a pub on Stretford Road with my grandmother and their friends. He can't remember the name of the pub as they all called it "Winnies" after the landlady Winifred who had a husband called Tom and a son also called Tom. If anyone remembers this pub or my grandparents Faye Ellis or Dave Hayes please get in touch. :)

I went to City Road School and vaguely remember the name Birchall. I seem to remember two of them, if I remember right one was tall and slim the other was just the opposite. The rounder one was quite funny, that would have been round about 1949 or 50/51. I also remember swimming in the ews water tanks in Hulme near the barracks
Hello, I too went to Duke Street School and then on to Jackson Street School, I think I left School in 1959. I lived in Bonsall Street with my mum and dad, Ivy and Fred Hurst, we lived next-door-but-one to the McCarthy family and we still send cards at Christmas to each other. It's nice to keep in touch. Hi Anne who went to Mulberry Street School. I was born in 1952 and went to Gaythorn Primary School. We must have played your school at Rounders. We were Lancashire champions of 1963 and I was the bowler, having suffered many a thick lip from that hard ball! Like you, I passed for Grammar and went to Central Grammar School for girls, same as you. I was in class 1E to start off there and there were 4 Janice's in my class. I was known as Janice 4. Lovely to hear your story, though.
