I Was Here In 1965

I attended that school from about 1963 - 1966. (John Haines). The tall chemistry teacher was Dennis Sale (Fred we called him). Best teacher I ever had. Never lost my love of chemistry and science in general.
The change room cottage was a shocker in winter.
On the whole the school experience was great.

Don't remember the TV shop but I do remember the old terrace of houses just past the school gates. The council was waiting to pull them all down but there was still a resident there, known to us as blind Bob. We used to see/talk to him when he was passing the school gates some mornings.

Just found these posts and joined the Francis Frith site. Nice to see the comments, I was a pupil from the glorious Summer of 1959 to Summer 1965 and enjoyed every moment. Only caned once and that was for not enough History Homework six of the best from Mr Caldwell, however, his delivery of History and lasted me well and I can still remember some of his presentations.
Yes, I remember he day that Denis Sale [Fred] joined the school and from the very 'easy' Mr Bottomley for Maths in walked Fred Sale in his RAF Great coat and the mood changed.
I still find it quite incredible some of the actions that Teachers took then, in the Chemistry Lab Fred would kick the stool from under you if you were rocking on two legs, blackboard rubber being thrown was another of his tricks and of course the sniffing of chemicals that would leave us with tears and a streaming nose! Health and Safety?
The 'Hut' of 'Cottage' you mention in my day was the Pavillion and as a Hockey player we changed there on a Saturday morning and with the brilliant Paddy Locke in charge we had two years undefeated as a team whopping all the other local schools including Woolwich Poly! I have a picture somewhere of the pavilion but cannot find it at present not sure how you post images on here but if anyone wants to e mail me it is leshoskins@gmail.com and I will forward some images.

It was not a TV Shop it was a Cabinet Maker and Joiners and I am guessing they made cabinets for TV's and I do remember the fire, although I had left by then I was an 'Old Boy' in Hockey and Cricket right through to the late seventies.
Blind Bob was a well known figure in Bexleyheath and he was a Piano Tuner and often came to my house in Barnehurst to tune our Piano.
I remember one lunch time I used to get the 486 to Barnehurst for lunch and the Bus Conductor tried to exclude Blind Bob from getting on the bus and even at that age I stood up to this aggressive person and he then let Bob get on the bus!
