My Memories Of Salford

A Memory of Salford.

I was born in the upstairs back room of my maternal Gran's house at 20 John Street, Pendleton. I was told there was an air raid going on at the time. My first school was John Street where there was a play ground on the roof, but that was only for older kids. I remember playing the part of the wolf in Red Riding Hood and also Joseph in the Nativity when I was about 4 or 5.
I lived with my parents at 9 Gold Street (next to John Street) but spent a lot of time with my gran Alice Goodier, who minded me when my mam and dad were at work.
My gran used to take me to the top of John Street and across Broad Street, to sit on the forms and just watch the traffic go by. I used to have an Ian Allen book for collecting British Road Service Depot numbers.
My next school was Halton Bank, nicknamed the school for swanks. I recall scoring my first try in the rugby school sports and the sports teacher, Mr Grainger, gave me threepence for scoring it.
In about 1950/1951 I used to go to a museum club each Saturday morning at Salford Museum Peel Park. When the statue of Queen Victoria was removed because of extensions to Salford Technical College (now Salford University). I remember they found a "time capsule" under it and it was an old sweet jar which had coins and newspaper article stuff in it. They passed it around our group at the museum club. Once, we were taken down into the cellar and I remember seeing an Egyptian sarcophagus (Coffin) and how scary I thought it was down in that cellar.
My second home was in Duchy Street, Seedley and when I married our first home was at 38 West Ashton Street. In 1971 we migrated to Western Australia.
