Happy Days At Pickmere..........

A Memory of Pickmere.

So many good times had during my youth at Pickmere........
A mate of mine (who had been there previously with his Dad) invited myself and some friends to travel with him down for a days fishing on a farmers pond off Pickmere lane,on our bicycles from Salford....(only 20 miles each way!!).
The weather was fine and we arrived early enough to have a magical days fishing, catching lots of crucian carp, rudd and the odd tench!!
We went as often as we could, and also enjoyed some adventurous night fishing sessions.
I remember the chalets on Pickmere Lane, I seem to remember people used them as holiday homes.
My mates Dad used to join us and when we were old enough we used to go drinking in the pubs near the lake, i remember the Endeavour Club and the Jubilee club, in one of them they had dancing in the evening. My older sister had told me that she had been told that my Grandad had been in the local newspapers for saving a person drowning in the lake.
I always felt an affinity with the area, and later used to take my children on the train to Plumley and walk down to the lake for a day out, even in the 1990s (before it was gentrified!!) there was a fairground next to the lake, rowing boats and motor boats, and such a beautiful location!!
I sometimes took my children to play on the play park off Linnards Lane Wincham, and years later had a strange feeling, after discovering during some family history research, that in the late 1890s my Great Grandad, and Grandad(both named Sam Walkey) had lived at one of the houses across the road from the park!!
