I grew up here ...happy memories , loved the lake and fun fair , surrounding countryside , would be either sat on a jetty with my feet in the water watching the boats come and go , or hiding in the dense shrubbery at the top of the hill overlooking the fun fair . The glass bottomed boat , was a favourite , it fascinated me as a child , I'd go on it as often as I could . The little beach area , with the line of trees , was ...see more
This is the cottage my grandparents Mary (Molly) and Harry Winnington lived for over 70 years. I along with my sisters spent many happy times there during holidays and weekends. We used to visit nanna's friends, Ethyl and Percy Robinson on Earles Lane. My friends Louise and Michelle Moore, Auntie Margaret and Uncle Frank all from Field House across the road. Louise and I spent our teens sprawled out on the front ...see more
My memories are of living at 37 pickmere lane from 1969 age 7. My mum Beryl Owen still lives there now and I still live in Wincham. I will always remember the "bob bob bob" of the motor boats which I could here from my bedroom window. Mums and Dads house backs on to two fields and then the lake below it. This was my playground for a lot of my childhood. I too remember the fairground, the rowing boats and motor ...see more
So many good times had during my youth at Pickmere........ A mate of mine (who had been there previously with his Dad) invited myself and some friends to travel with him down for a days fishing on a farmers pond off Pickmere lane,on our bicycles from Salford....(only 20 miles each way!!). My wife came across John Baylies memories of Jack Spence. I was the little lad who also helped bring water from the spring. I only lived over the fields and was always down the lake, I remember the rowing boats blue & white ones. The Royal Iris was a large boat, it took day trippers around the lake for a shilling. People came from miles around to enjoy the countryside and the fun of the fair. In those days ...see more
Jack & Unice Spencer were my grandparents, they owned the boats on Pickmere Lake. My life after the war was idillic when living with them, thousands flocked from Salford & Manchester to camp, fish and row my grandad's boats. We charged 2 bob an hour, 10p in to-days money. On a Saturday, before dark, I used to row across the lake putting eel lines out with my grandad, then on a Sunday, row out ...see more
I am trying to trace any relatives of lads from Tabley who died during WWI. James Mills Preston lived at 82, Budworth Road - his brother Harry emigratred to the US and died a few years ago. Can anyone tell me where 82 is? I believe he went to work at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, but enlisted in Hampshire - why? Also, George Riley who worked as a labourer at Peartree Farm, Pickmere Lane. If anyone knows anything, please email me. Many thanks,Tony.
I used to live in the house opposite the farm called Wall Hill Cottage. I remember picking the damsons from the trees lining the path and sell them to passers by. My parents renovated the cottage from a very run down state then we moved away around 1985/6. When we owned the property we had a large garden and had two donkeys in a paddock at the end. I visited recently (13-Mar-2011) and the cottage hasn't ...see more
I remember long bus rides to my Auntie Molly and Uncle Harry's house, going with my grandad, who was well known around there - He is who I'm trying to gain information of, as my son is interested in his Great Grandad. I have a paper cutting with Samuel Yarwood on Pickmere Lake rowing, a very tranquil picture, and I remember the long days I spent in Auntie Molly's garden picking fruit and apples from her trees, ...see more
There used to be a little cabin in a corner of the dodgems. My brother Geof used to play. If you remember anything about those days please get in touch. I suppose you could say he was a disc jockey. I would like to know if anyone remembers any of them. Maybe some of the Cheethams kept any of the records. They were good days. The fields all around were covered with tents, me and my mates had a rare old time with the ...see more
