My First School

Living in Hellidon I was sent to Preston Capes when I came 5 years old in 1951/2. Mrs Smith was the teacher. I remember the smell of coffee coming from her. We went by bus from Hellidon on a Judd's bus through Charwelton. The school had one room with two classes and there was a pot bellied stove in the middle of the back wall. Preston Capes School. 1958

At 5 years old I went on a school bus from Charwelton to Preston Capes school. It was 1 big classroom with coke fires and an outside toilet. Mrs Smith taught all the children of mixed ages. She had 2 blackboards, one was written in printing and the other in "real" handwriting. We each had a cardboard box to keep our work in.
