St Pauls Mission
I was 8 in 1950 and often walked from my house in Brindley Avenue near Dane Road Station to School Road. On the way I would pass the bombed out wereckage of St. Paul's church at the corner of Waverley, and Dargle. I didn't understand Latin writing then and always called it Saint Pavis's because of the latin 'V' for our 'U'. It was a great place to play in there as well. It is now a block of flats I think.

RE: RE: St Pauls Mission
I, too, was 8 in 1950 and often walked past the wrecked church of St. Paul's, wondering what had happened to it but never asked. Maybe you will remember Knotts, the greengrocer's, 72, Cross Street. Frieda was my mother's sister. She and Harry retired to Cuddington in Cheshire and Frieda was about 82 when she died and Harry a little older.
We lived in King's Road but I often visited my aunt and remember Toogoods, Lister's the cleaners, Hockenhull the butcher's, Greenbergs, the jewellers, and, and, and. There was a Scottish Terrier around at that time who would wait at the traffic lights at the corner of Ashfield Road until they turned green and then cross the road. I think he belonged to a one of the shop owners on the opposite side to my aunt's shop. Strange how a memory hint can bring back so much.
The name Garner rings a bell but I have the feeling it has to do with my elder brother, Chris Owen, who played rugby for Ashton-Mersey. Who knows??
I now live in Switzerland but visiting this site warms my heart and helps an occasional homesickness.
