The High Street leads to Shooters Hill, which was once a very swampy area.
Bedale is also just off the A1 and on the route into Wensleydale from Leeming Bar.
Now known as the Bear of Rodborough, this has been a stopping place for centuries, and played an important part as a collecting point for carrier services in this area of steep hills.
Originally a 13th-century farm, the building became a halt for packhorse trains carrying wool across the hills.
In the background we can see the funicular railway for those not wanting to make the 485-foot walk up Constitution Hill.
On the hill stood Preesall village school.
The landscape of hills, bar- rows and earthworks remind us of the beginnings of civilisation with the Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements and hill forts.
In later years the premises became Beatties toyshop, and it is now a bar/restaurant, the Bedroom.
Just a few yards up the hill from All Saints' Church, Barn Hill is a far cry from the commercial bustle of Red Lion Square.
A mile to the north of the stadium, Barn Hill takes about itself an air of rural contemplation as the camera looks out to the surrounding hills.
At the summit of Lodge Hill to the north of the Upper Winchendon ridge is a French chateau.
