At the summit of Lodge Hill to the north of the Upper Winchendon ridge is a French chateau. It was built by a French architect with the splendidly florid name of Hippolyte Alexandre Gabriel Walter Destailleur for Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, who had bought the estate in 1872. Lodge Hill was then a bare hill, but the Baron imported vast numbers of mature trees to give it its present wooded character; teams of horses toiled from far and wide to haul the trees to their destination.
