Llantwit Major stands on the Afon Colhugh, and the place is said to have once been a port.
Corris, which gave its name to the Welsh narrow-gauge railway line, is a slate-quarrying village in the valley of the Afon Dulas.

This finely-composed study shows the Afon Bowydd, the road bridge, the railway bridge, the ranks of terraces of Blaenau, and the mountains beyond.
This beautifully proportioned stone bridge (Y Bont Fawr means 'the big bridge'), built over the Afon Conwy in 1636, has been a well-known beauty spot and subject for artists for centuries.

Inside the church is a bone: according to legend, it is a rib from a cow that provided all the milk for the village!
Later the race served a bone mill and a small woollen and cotton mill nearby.
The village sits astride the A6, only two miles north of Mountsorrel, and although deeply embedded in granite country, the buildings in the photograph lack any of that hard-edged quality.
