Nostalgic memories of Sidcup's local history

Share your own memories of Sidcup and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Does anyone remember the Grocery shop that was once on Bedford Road, not far from Longland’s Primary School? It’s now a house and owned by a friend. I’m trying to find out the history of his property and ideally would like to try and find a photo. It was called Gerald’s but later changed in the 60’s sometime. TIA
We moved to the Grove in North Cray from Edgebury Chislehurst in 1965. I went to the Boys side of Alma Rd School in 966 and later to Bexley Lane School. I have mixed emotions of attending Bexley Lane school, (now Cleave Park School) most were ones of dislike, I was bullied terribly and nothing was done about it. In fact the Civics and Business studies teacher clearly condoned it, letting other lads lay me onto the ...see more
I lived in Sidcup asa child up to the age of 11, moving away from the area in 1970. I went to Days Lane Primary School. I don’t remember there being a high street as such but a row of shops I do remember which included a Hairdresser, a newsagent and a small grocer’s as supermarkets used to be called then. I have fond memories of walking past the shops to school and across the way was a long woodland path that led to a ...see more
I am Peter Nugent and I went to Alma Road in the early '50's. Used to live at Old Farm Avenue and one day on the way to school, I came across an old friend; a stag beetle which brought back memories of my childhood in Mussoorie, India. I took it to school with me and was playing with it under my desk lid when the teacher whose name I think was a Mr Teal, discovered this and made me stand in a corner in front of the ...see more
I also attended Chis and Sid as it is now known, studying on the technical side and left in 1959. We always envied the secretarial girls as they did not have needlework lessons- ugh, but we all loved cookery classes as the teacher was lovely, and I still use some of her recipes. I was in the netball team with Ann Sones? my best friend was Frances Collett. I also met my first boyfriend on the school bus and I often wonder what ...see more
Mine isn't actually a memory of Flat 53b because I was much too young to remember the place but, wait for it, I am the baby sister who was born there in 1946. Yes, that is amazingly true and I still have the picture that my sister Hazel sent to me boxed away with other photographs and memories. The funniest thing is that Hazel didn't ever tell me in any of her correspondences that she had posted this to the site and the ...see more

That was the winter we finally got to use our sledge. Every evening after school we'd traipse to The Glade where there was a natural amphitheatre of sorts and sledge down the steep incline. The Glade was lit so we could stay quite late and there were loads of children there. The lake in front of the Rose Bruford College was frozen, so we could slide on that. All in all we had a brilliant time. Throughout all ...see more
