Nostalgic memories of Tadworth's local history

Share your own memories of Tadworth and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I lived here in the late 60's early 70's when it was closed. My dad Peter Bishop ran the pub up the road. Paid a nostalgic trip back here in Sept '19 and what a shame that the old place had gone. Still, brought back a lot of memories of playing in the garden and catching newts in the pond that was there. We had so much fun exploring the magical building. My late sister and myself used to play 'shops' among all the ...see more
I was born over the shop at 1, High Street, then a MacFisheries where my Grandad was the manager until he retired at the end of October, 1956. We stayed there, with the shop closed, until moving to Downland Way, Tattenham Corner in 1958. Mum worked at R.J. Chapple (have I got the spelling right?) where she was the counter clerk at the sub-Post Office until she retired. The shops in the High Street that I remember ...see more
My memory for dates is suspect, so forgive any slight inaccuracy, however the important facts remain vivid and accurate memories. Great friends of my family gave a party for their son David's birthday in 1962. He had unfortunately died as a result of a car crash earlier that year - so it was a very mixed emotion celebration. David was my very closest friend. As well as my ...see more
We lived in Tadourne Rd,our house was called Hova,I'm not sure what the number was.We were there until about 1965,I was born in Ewell in 1957. My father was Eddie Cracknell,a jockey who was quite successful in the UK for many years. He was an Aussie who came over to race, met my mother,a dancer in the West End...very glam. I have many memories of Tadworth growing up! Lovely friends who lived on the corner ...see more
Probably around 1964 for about three years I worked at Jennetts Restaurant at the Dorking crossroads, as a waiter, for Mr Lesley Hargreaves and his poodle, Trudy. In those days we did flambe cooking at the tables. The head waiter was John Rabbets from Hastings. Jim, the gardener from Epsom would also officiate as wine waiter, when he could drag himself away from the sporting life in the greenhouse. The ...see more
During the 1960's I lived next door to Jennetts Restaurant, in the Bricklayers Arms pub. Mr Hargreaves was the owner/manager and employed a number of very exotic Italian and Spanish waiters. "Jim" the gardener (the restaurant had very lovely and extensive grounds) was an inveterate gambler and in the days when televisions were scarce used to spend his afternoons watching our television when the racing was on.
When I was born in 1939 we lived at 97 Shelvers Way, but my very first memory happened in 1944. It was a lovely sunny day and my mother, Doris Parker, was going to feed the chickens at the bottom of the garden. I was playing outside when mother called out to tell me to go inside and into the shelter as there was a "funny" thing in the sky. I never did get to the shelter, only the dining-room and the next thing I ...see more
