More about this scene

The original timber building, dating from c1580, has two gables; the brick extension to the right is 19th-century. The (now) central gable has a delicate oriel over a wider bay window on the ground floor. The Red Lion's ship figurehead is often wrongly said to have come from a Dutch ship which fought at the battle of Sole Bay in 1672, but it actually dates from c1740. In 1896 Herbert Fletch was the landlord and local builder.
