More about this scene

The first lighthouse at Dungeness was built in 1610, and lit by a coal fire. It was replaced in 1792 by a lighthouse lit by sperm whale oil. In 1904 the lighthouse in this photograph was built, with an incandescent paraffin light that could be seen for twenty miles.
