Thanks For Jogging My Memories Of Wombwell
A Memory of Wombwell.
Came across this place by accident - glad I did.
I spent the first 11 years of life down Hawson Street, before moving to Aldham House Estate. I can still remember the "old gas works" the other side of the canal, and the glass works not too far away. Getting on the steam train at Wombwell West for the annual Station Lane WMC day trips to Cleethorpes. Playing cricket & football in the gas works fields, running down to wave as the Flying Scotsman came past. I recall the time the field next door to the gas works flooded for the first time (and subsequently became famous for attracting 2 Pink Flamingos). Running through Clancies to get to Park Street School. The old Empire Theatre at the top of Hawson Street, and the summer arrival of the "feast" (fairground). Cracking the old "whip & top" up and down the street. The smell emanating from the small caravan in Wombwell Market that sold pie & peas. Many, many hours fishing at Wombwell Res, reading all the numbers found at Convicts Tunnel. Wonderfull Autumns walking through Wombwell Woods and gathering Hazelnuts from the plentiful trees there.
Oh how I could go on............
So thanks for bringing all those wonderful memories to the surface. As I live in Edinburgh now, I must make the effort to get back for a visit.
